Botanical Name: Podocarpus totara.
Source: Timber is recovered from ancient forests,
levelled and buried by volcanoes approximately 2000 years
ago. The logs have been stained dark by decaying vegetation,
yet most is still in good condition.
Availability: This resource is widespread in certain
areas and regular supplies are available for the immediate
future.
Air Drying Density: 480kg/m3
Characteristics: The grain/colour varies from black/brown
to red/brown. The timber is relatively soft, but sound. Good
finishes are needed to protect against deterioration
Traditional uses: Firewood, piles, battern etc. Latterly
furniture, joinery and panelling. Doors and fitments.

Black Totara is an excellent timber which when densified by
the Generation-4 finish makes wonderful
timber tops.
